Susan Harper

September 17, 1949 — November 3, 2022

Harper, Susan June (nee Bacon)

Sadly, on Thursday, November 3,2022 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital following several months of illness Susan June Harper ( nee Bacon) passed away.  She will greatly be missed by her husband of 46 years, Sandy, and their daughter Andrea.

Sue was born on September 17, 1949 to parents, John and June Bacon and lived on Rhydwen Avenue along with her younger sister Patty.

Although the family moved to Ottawa when Sue was 17, she never lost touch with her “friend for life”, Kathy (Wallace) Longlad who grew up across the street from her on Rhydwen and who was with her until just before the end.  Sue attended Brookfield HS in Ottawa and after graduating she went to Ottawa Teachers College. Her first teaching role was at Riverview PS in Cumberland, Ontario where she started their first ever Four-year old Kindergarten program.  After three years at Riverview Sue moved on to teach at Briargreen PS in Nepean where she was involved in teaching all grades from Junior Kindergarten to grade 6 for 30 years.  Sue spent the bulk of her teaching years at the Grade 5-6 level. She was heavily involved in running extra-curricular activities and her Cross Country running teams and Track and Field teams were always near the top of the list in the Carleton Board.  Sue was a compassionate  teacher who taught the student, rather than the program. Her attention to detail and her doctrine of “ do it right or do it again” challenged all of her students to better themselves and to be proud of what they could accomplish.... and they did!

Sue also spent evenings working voluntarily along with her mother, June, at several locations with LD adults  ( learning disabled).  After Sue retired in 2002 she volunteered at the Shepherds of Good Hope, running the clothing distribution centre. She also volunteered at The Redwoods Retirement Home doing nail painting and chatting with the female residents.

Sue loved to travel and unfortunately she will not get to see Switzerland where she was scheduled to go next September/October after the trip was postponed twice due to Covid. She will be sadly missed by  all of her extended family members on both sides and her many friends and colleagues.

Visitation will be at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Home, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean (between Baushore & Baseline Rd.),  on Thursday, November 10, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  The Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Friday, November 11 at 2:00 pm . A Reception will follow. All are welcome to stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Shepherds of Good Hope would be appreciated.
