In Loving Memory

McGann, Stanley “Stan”

Passed peacefully away at the Civic Hospital, Ottawa on September 11th, 2020 at the age of 100.  Predeceased by his much beloved wife Janet (nee MacDonald).  He was the son of the late Nellie and John and was predeceased by his dear brothers Jack and Kenneth. He will be greatly missed by his nephew Peter (Catherine). A wonderful great uncle to his grand nephews Bryan (Jennifer) and Mark (Emma) and grand niece Christina (Lee), as well as their families.  Stan was born on May 26th, 1920 in Nottingham, England and lived through many of life’s adventures before immigrating to Canada in April 1947 to work for General Electric in Peterborough. He settled into Canadian life and was soon curling and playing soccer and continuing his involvement with scouting.  In 1951 he moved to Ottawa and began a career as an electrical engineer with the Department of National Defence, until his retirement in 1980.  In 1960 he married the love of his life Janet in Berwick, Nova Scotia.  1954 had seen Stan become one of only 300 members, at that time, in the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Here he continued his passion for curling, and started a new passion golf. His commitment to the Hunt Club saw Stan hold many positions supporting both the curling and golf sides of the Club. However, the roles he enjoyed most were those related to the social side. In the late 1960’s Stan became Entertainment Director and in 1983 he was asked to Chair of the Ottawa Hunt Club’s 75th Anniversary Committee. He played his last games of golf at the age of 93 years but was a social member to the very end.  In the mid 1960’s Stan and Janet purchased a cottage and enjoyed many summers at Bass Lake where they shared many happy times with neighbours and friends.  In retirement Stan and Janet became true snowbirds enjoying winters in Florida beginning in the early 1990’s. They would spend the majority of their Florida winters in Vero Beach, at Dodger Pines. After a hurricane destroyed their Florida home, they moved to Lady Lake where they continued their enjoyment of golfing and entertaining.  A special thank you to the staff at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their care and compassion.  Thank you to the staff at the Ravines Retirement Residence for their care and support over the years.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions and out of respect to Stan’s family and friends a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when he can be honoured with all his family and friends together.  Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada in lieu of flowers.  Condolences, tributes and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com
