Peter Oegema

With great sadness we announce that Peter Oegema passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2023 at the age of 61.  He was the youngest of 5 children born to John and Gonny Oegema (DeVries). He is survived by his sister Ellen (John Hessels).

Predeceased by his parents and his brothers Bart (Lori), John (Anneke) and Rick (Gamble).  He is fondly remembered by his 11 nephews and nieces, extended family, special friend Mike Beland and many other friends.

Peter lived his entire life in the same house in Ottawa, ON.  After serving many years as a managing partner at Oegema, Nicholson & Associates Insurance Brokers, he retired and devoted his time as a volunteer in various capacities.  Peter loved to read. He loved to spoil his rescue dogs.  He was active in his local church community and made a few trips internationally with Habitat for Humanity. Most of his energy was devoted to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard and the Barrhaven Community Garden.  These efforts led him to be awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by the Governor General of Canada in 2022.

Peter will always be remembered for his infectious laugh, his sacrificial hospitality, his empathy for others and his deep quiet faith that shaped his life.

We would like to thank the staff at Queensway Carlton Hospital, especially the ICU staff, for their respectful care for Peter and family.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 6:30-8:30 at Barrhaven Fellowship Christian Reformed Church (3058 Jockvale Rd).  A Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, March 8 at 11:00 AM at same location. Memorial donations can be given to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard (barrhavenfoodcupboard.ca) or to Harvest House (harvesthouse.org) or to a charity of your choice.
