Patrick Doherty, aged 77, better known as Dort, finally escaped the naggings of his fifth wife, Jill, and the never ending disappointments of his three children, Geoff, Erin and Jamie, and eight grandchildren, on January 16, 2020. Proud to be born in Donegal, he had the most stereotypical Irish clan, is predeceased by his loving mother, Ellen, his father, George, his hero brothers, George, Jimmy, and Terry, and is survived by his dear sister, Marie. Pat was raised in Hamilton and reluctantly left its smokestacks to be lured by a seductive red-head to settle in the hustle and bustle of Kanata in 1968, and was in abject servitude for the next 51 years. But what’s not to love about a man who never passed up the chance to negotiate a better deal, laughed hardest at his own jokes, never figured out how to use a microwave, couldn’t assemble an Ikea bookcase despite a lifelong love of talking shop with contractors, and proudly strutted around hot, sandy beaches in his speedo. He will be greatly missed at the Elgin Street Diner, Victoria’s Secret, Home Depot, and financially by his dermatologist and dentist. The halls and staffroom of Gloucester High School with its “meatheads”, as well as the colourful campfire talks in Algonquin Park have never seen the likes since his retirement. Heaven has just gotten a little bit louder and a lot more fun.
All are invited to attend a mass in his honour at St. Isidore Church, Kanata, on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 11:00 am, followed by a celebratory reception at 12 noon in the adjacent church hall. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice Care Ottawa (www.hospicecareottawa.ca
