Peacefully in Ottawa, after a short battle with cancer at the age of 85 years. Loving husband for 60 years to the late Pauline Ethier (nee Bourassa), 2017. He leaves to mourn his children Joel (Cherrilyn), Pierre (Karen), Philippe and Daniel, his grandchildren, Darren E., Zachary, Darren J. (Angela), Stefan and his great-grandchildren Riley, Madelyn and Zoey. Predeceased by his parents Marcedor and Concorde Ethier and brother of Rita (deceased), Lea (deceased), Cecile, Lomer, Lili (deceased), Bernadette (deceased), Roger, Alain and Diane. Nil was born in Ville-Marie, QC and married Pauline June 17, 1957. Shortly thereafter, at the birth of his first son, they moved to Sudbury and established the Chez Nils Beauty Salon which he operated for 40 years until his retirement. Nil was a devoted father, driving his sons to hockey rinks and freezing his feet standing in snow banks watching the games. While still a new husband, he and Pauline travelled from Holland to Morocco and were fortunate to be able to visit South and Central America and the US. There was always time to celebrate special occasions with large family dinners and lively conversations, which occasionally were confused as arguments, regardless; he made sure that your wine glass was never empty. In later years he would often ruin a nice walk in the country by bringing his gold clubs. A celebration of his life will be held on May 14th, at 2:00pm, at the Tubman funeral home located at 3440 Richmond Street, Nepean, Ontario, K2H 8H7 (613.726.0292). Nil will be laid to rest and share an urn with Pauline in Sudbury. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. The family thanks all of the healthcare staff at the Ottawa Hospital for the dedicated care that they provided and the healthcare staff of the Elizabeth Bruyere palliative care unit in our father’s last days.
