Janice Janette (Beattie) Osborne

1934-2019

Osborne, Janice Jeannette (née Beattie), 85, of Stittsville, died 15 February 2019 in Ottawa, surrounded by her loving family. Survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, the Very Reverend Robert J. Osborne, Dean Emeritus of Rupertsland; daughter Jennifer (Mike) Hubbard, and beloved grandchildren Bronwyn and Jacob, all of Ottawa. Also survived by cousins Wilma Jean Forster of Texas, Keith Spurr, Diane (Michael) Lawrence, and Elinor Skelton all of Toronto; in-laws Phyllis (Keith) Porteous, Carine Osborne and Suzanne (Allen) Calder. Jan will be sorely missed by the extended family, Rob and Liz Hubbard, Ed, Karen, Eleanor and Muireall Daley, all of Ottawa, and innumerable friends and colleagues across Canada.

Janice was born 29 January, 1934 in Belleville, Ontario, the only child of Clarence and Mary Edna (Cooke) Beattie. She graduated as an R.N. from Montreal General Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1956 and worked as a psychiatric head nurse for twelve years. The decision to pursue a B.Sc. in Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon led to her marriage to Bob Osborne, who was a theological student at the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad. Married in 1970, they moved shortly after the birth of their daughter to Kamloops, BC. Here began her lifelong journey as a dedicated clergy spouse, sharing her own unique gifts of hospitality and welcoming at St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Church of Cleopas. She continued to do so after their move to St. Thomas, Sherwood Park, AB in 1982, where she also worked as a teacher's aide for special needs children for ten years.  Their move to St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg in 1996 included some of her most challenging experiences and ultimately very rewarding years.

Throughout her life, Jan was steadfast in deepening her faith through personal reflection and study (Education for Ministry, associate of the Sisters of St. John the Divine) as well as being a dynamic leader in Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, Bible study groups and pastoral care teams. Jan treasured the many friendships cultivated across the country and she had a gift for knowing when to reach out to lend a hand, a listening empathetic ear or to provide a meal to those around her.  Jan and Bob retired to Ottawa in 2011, to share in the lives of their family, in particular the grandchildren who brought her so much joy and fulfilment. In retirement, Jan could often be found working on her puzzles or completely engrossed in a new novel. They found a parish home at Christ Church Bells Corners.

At the family's request, each of the above-named parishes (St. Paul’s, St. Thomas, St. John’s and CCBC) has made special arrangements for any memorial donations to be directed to a specific project in Jan’s memory. Please contact them directly for details.

The funeral will be Friday, March 1st, 2019, at 2:00 pm at Christ Church Bells Corners, 3861 Old Richmond Road, with a reception to follow. Interment at a later date, at St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Stanley’s Corners.
