Elizabeth Graham-Smith

Elizabeth died at 90 on the morning of May 2. She leaves behind her two daughters, Claire and Jane, and their husbands, Chip and Steve, respectively; three grandchildren; and one great grandson. And last but not least her Bechstein piano, which has found a new home.

Born in the UK, classical music was her lifelong passion. She performed from a young age in England, Canada, US, Australia. Over several decades, she taught piano, was an accompanist and adjudicator, and played chamber music. In her early years in Canada, she delighted young children in Music and Movement classes. She was passionate about introducing young people to classical music and was instrumental in establishing a youth program at the NAC in Ottawa.

Other passions were the Jane Austen Society, gardening and living near the water. With her late husband, Beric, she attended and performed at many Jane Austen conventions. Her flower gardens were her pride and joy. Having grown up near the sea in England, she loved the open water. Her many years by the river in Dunrobin gave her much peace and joy.

New Edinburgh Square Retirement Residence, Ottawa, was her final home, where she had a great influence on residents with her wit and musical knowledge at her bimonthly Music Chats. Her final chat was April 27.
