William Stephen Shurben

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of William (“Bill”) Stephen Shurben on November 19, 2025, at the Ottawa General Hospital, following a short but difficult battle with cancer. Born in Toronto, Ontario, on April 17, 1956, Bill spent most of his life in Ottawa.

Beloved husband of Karen Shurben (née Cook), loving father of Nick (Laura) and Alex (Teri), and devoted “Grandbilly” to Jack, Zoe, Lilah and Vivian. Son of William and Margaret (deceased) Shurben, brother of Mike (Melanie) and Susan (Steven), brother-in-law to Cheryl (John), Richard (deceased) (Sharon), Susan, and Linda. He was a caring uncle to his many nieces and nephews whom he loved.

Bill was defined by his curiosity and many passions including travel, hiking, cycling, baking, reading, and a thirst for knowledge. Above all, he will be remembered for his devotion and love for his family and friends who will miss him dearly.

A special thank you to all the staff of the Ottawa General Hospital for their compassionate care throughout his illness.

A celebration of life will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean on Sunday December 21, 2025 from 11am to 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice.
