It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Victor Atkinson on June 22, 2025, in hospital, just weeks shy of his 95th birthday. Vic was predeceased by the love of his life, Christine Roberta Atkinson (née Hebben), on February 26, 2024. They were devoted partners for 71 years, having shared a remarkable life together.
Vic was born an only child on August 3, 1930, to Nellie and James Atkinson in East Surrey Grove, Peckham, London, England. Vic’s early years were shaped by his love of aviation and his talent for drawing. As a young boy in the 1930s, he would create cockpits from cardboard boxes with hand-painted instruments made from old tin cans. His artistic gifts were recognized early on when he earned a scholarship to Camberwell College of Art. After college and at the age of 18, he was conscripted to Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) where he served for two years as an aircraft mechanic.
Vic started his artistic career in London at Larkins Studio. A good friend introduced him to a Canadian film producer, Budge Crawley, and this introduction led to an offer to work in Canada for Crawley Films. Embracing this opportunity, Vic immigrated to Ottawa with his young bride Christine to start a new chapter. After honing his filmmaking and directing skills at Crawley Films, Vic cemented his legacy in animation by founding Atkinson Film Arts Ltd., an animation studio that played a pioneering role in Ottawa’s animation industry.
Vic also enjoyed success as a fine artist with many solo exhibits throughout his life. After retiring, he became a fixture at the Ottawa Remote Control Club where he enjoyed flying his planes and spending time with his friends at the club.
Vic is lovingly remembered by his children Lee (Kathi), Barry, and Melissa; his grandchildren Daryl (Jenn) and Chelsea (Rob); and his great-grandchildren Elliott, Mae, and Felix.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the palliative care doctors and nurses at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their compassion and kindness.
At Vic’s request, there will be no formal funeral service.
In his memory, donations to The Salvation Army are gratefully appreciated—a tribute to the organization that supported his family and community through the hardships of wartime London.
