Sunita Mukerji (née Sunita Pathak) - 1939-2023
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Sunita Mukerji, wife of Debabrata Mukerji, mother of Mistu Mukherjee and Jishnu Mukerji, and grandmother (“Gumma”) of Anika, Neil, Siddharth, Shiven, Monika, and Shayla. Mom was a daughter first, a sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, auntie, and grandmother. And she was a friend. She had an uncanny knack to make friends with just about anyone she encountered, whether it be at the grocery store, airport, her neighborhood, or our cultural community. Anywhere, really. Her impact was far and wide. And she always just simply and truly cared about others.
Outside of her immediate family, the longest-lasting relationship she had was being the loving partner to her husband. They have had a lifelong love affair that is a story for the ages. They met in college in India and had been absolutely inseparable ever since.
Those who knew her, knew that Ma was a trailblazer throughout her life. Whether it was leading her family out of Lahore to settle in Delhi following the Partition, raising her siblings, pursuing the man who was to become the love of her life for 66 years or beginning a new life in Canada in the 1960s. She was unafraid to fight for what she believed in and made her opinions known. We have known these things about her but above all, it was her loving devotion to her family that we all remember her for. She showered love on all those that came in her life, and for this, we will never again know a pure love like hers.
When we think about what might be the best way to honor Ma, thinking about what she cared about most … it was always that everyone around her should be happy and be the best possible versions of themselves. And in times like these, people often ask what they can do to help … So I urge you to simply honor her and be the best that you can be. Be nice to people, work hard, and take care of your health. Start today.
Ma passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1 surrounded by her family. She has left a hole in our lives and will be dearly missed. Mom, we miss you very much. We will ALWAYS miss and honor you. We love you dearly.
A private service was held for family on December 4. In lieu of gifts or flowers, kindly make a donation in Sunita Mukerji's honor to The Canadian Red Cross
