Stephen Richard Pogson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on April 14, 1953. The family moved to a pleasant area close to Manchester in 1957, and Steve spent the remainder of his childhood and youth in that house. He did well at school and went on to receive a BSc Hons in Physics from Reading University in 1974 and an MSc in Operational Research from the University of Hull in 1975.
Steve then returned to Manchester where he could indulge his love of football (soccer) and of Manchester United, and where he met the second love of his life, Marion. Steve knew what a wonderful place Canada was from his holiday jobs on tobacco farms and was determined to try and make a life there. Steve and Marion were married in 1980 -- according to Steve, the condition being that Marion agree to try Canada. [???]
Starting in Toronto and then Ottawa, Steve and Marion were quickly able to produce two brand new Canadians, Barry and Lynn. Steve formed a company, Stepsoft Inc, through which he pursued his computer programming career with freelance contracts. His interest in football and Man Utd continued, and he enjoyed coaching children in the sport. Later in life he met some good friends at the Fitzroy Harbour Soccer Club, where for over 25 years he played for various teams, the last being one of the “oldtimers” teams, the Fitzroy Dambusters; some of his team mates continue that activity to this day! In the later stages of his condition Steve’s interest in Man Utd wilted, and we will never know whether this was the dementia or a realistic view of the team’s performance.
Steve and Marion’s family expanded over the years when Barry and his wife Shannon gave them four grandchildren Kate, Jake, Claire and Quinn; and Lynn and husband Matt presented them with Danny. We will all miss Steve and look forward to being reminded, on Wednesday Jan. 14, of what a great guy he was.
