SKAFEL, Selena ANN (nee Ivill). On June 13, 2023, peacefully and with her beloved sons, Ann Skafel passed away at her residence in Ottawa. She was in her 85th year. Born July 12, 1938 in New Liskeard, Ann’s family moved to Montreal and Kitchener in her teens. After high school, Ann moved to London, ON to become a nurse. A natural caregiver, this was her true calling and laid the foundation for lifelong friendships. Through these friends, she met her husband, Jon Skafel (1936-2011), started a family and settled in St. Thomas in 1977. Her sons, partners and especially grandsons, were the world to her. In 2019, Ann moved to Ottawa to be close to Andrew (Laurie Kizik, Emmett and Owen) and Paul (Betsey Baldwin, Aaron, Thomas). Though away from her close friends, she cherished the opportunity for family gatherings, visits and care this provided.
A long-time member of the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club, Ann enjoyed golfing, socializing in bridge and poker clubs, and a quilting guild. She enjoyed travel and had a sixth sense for finding outlet malls in rural America. In her career, Ann found fulfillment in her role teaching pediatric nursing.
Ann is predeceased by husband Jon (2011), dear sister and brother-in-law Margaret (2019) and Greg Hanel (2008), mother and father Lillian (MacKenzie) (2013) and Tom Ivill (1954). She is survived by her sons Andrew (Laurie Kizik, Emmett, Owen) and Paul (Betsey Baldwin, Aaron, Thomas).
The family is very grateful for Ann’s wonderful care and attention at Amica at Westboro Park in Ottawa from both staff and community care.
Private interment and a public celebration of life will occur in September in St. Thomas, ON. Remembrances to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation or the Dementia Society gratefully acknowledged.
