Sally Ann Sandy

November 9, 1950 — August 2, 2025

With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Sally Ann Sandy on August 2, 2025, at the age of 74. Born an Anishinaabekwe of Northwest Angle #33, Angle Inlet side, Sally Ann was a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, and friend who touched many lives with her unique sense of humour and caring spirit.

She was part of the legacy of Frank and Adeline Sandy and came from a large family with a long, complex history—one shaped by love, hardship, and resilience. Sally Ann attended the Belleville School for the Deaf, an experience that brought her into the Deaf community, where she found a deep connection and became a full member of that second family.

A deeply spiritual woman, she believed in Jesus and embraced a faith open to all Christian denominations. Though raised Catholic, she often attended Presbyterian Church Deaf services, where she was embraced by a sense of belonging and fellowship.

Sally Ann took great pride in raising her children and providing them with love and protection through life’s many challenges. She loved easy laughs and silly humour passed down from her mother and often had a naughty twinkle in her eye that many will remember fondly. Her mischievous smile was warm, genuine, and unforgettable.

She enjoyed camping and fishing—activities rooted in her upbringing—and delighted in handicrafts, with sewing and crochet being her favorites. A fiercely determined gamer, she was the grandma who played to win and never backed down from a challenge.

She is survived by her children: Annette Sandy, Angeline Sandy (Jesse Easter), Bernard Morris (Nadine), and Colleen Morris. She is also remembered by Jim Morris, the father of Colleen and Bernard; her beloved grandchildren: Tomo, Jessica, Vanessa, Meeqkwan, Mateo, Aidan, Damon, and Ashton; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Sally Ann is also survived by her siblings: Frank Sandy Jr. (Colleen), Ferdinand Sandy, Francis Sandy (Roxanne), Sharon Sandy, Janice Redsky (beloved wife of the late Stewart), Darlynn Sandy (Darren), Lance Sandy (Sandra), Innes Sandy (Connie), and Margie Sandy-Meekis (John). She is fondly remembered by her uncles: Leslie Sandy, Kenneth Sandy, and Tom Jack; and her aunties: Elizabeth Sandy, Jane Tom, Mary Jack, and Effie Jack (Earl).

She leaves behind a wide and loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family—too numerous to name. Sally Ann loved to know them, follow their lives, and quietly wished the very best for each one.

Sally Ann was predeceased by her great-grandfather Old Man Sandy - Waachanimoitang; grandparents Fred & Alice Sandy and Charles & Agnes Jack, great-grandmother Maggie Lightning; brothers Ricky Sandy and Bobby Sandy, and sisters Georgina Sandy and Sylvia Sandy.

Visitation will be held at Tubman Funeral Home – Westboro Chapel, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Sunday, August 10th at Tubman Funeral Home, from 2 to 4 p.m.

We extend our deepest chi miigwetch to the dedicated staff at The Ottawa Hospital, New Orchard Lodge nursing home, and Wabano Medical Centre for their compassionate care and attention. We are also grateful to Northwest Angle #33 First Nation for their generous support in bringing our mother’s remains home to rest—without which, it would not have been possible to hold so many visitations or fulfill her final wishes. Special thanks as well to Tubman Funeral Home and Brown Funeral Home for their guidance and support during this time.

To accommodate family and friends who cannot travel to the Angle, a second visitation will be held in Kenora, Ontario at Brown Funeral Home, with a wake and burial at NWA#33, Inlet Side to follow. Details are expected to be confirmed within a few days, with plans likely for next week.

Her absence leaves a silence too deep for words—a void felt in every quiet moment, every missed laugh, every story left untold. We mourn not only the woman she was, but all the days we hoped to share that now must pass without her. Though her hands are now still and her voice no longer heard, her love lingers in the spaces between us.

She walks on into the spirit world, wrapped in the prayers of those who loved her, guided by the ancestors who walked before. May her journey be gentle. May she be welcomed with open arms. And may we who remain carry her memory forward—always.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
