Michael John Theodore McRae

June 11, 1959 — August 5, 2025

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Mike McRae who peacefully passed on August 5, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Mike will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife and best friend of 45 years, Susan McRae, and their four children: James McRae (Amanda Smith), Andrea McRae (Eduardo Alculumbre), Scott McRae (Madison Parslow), and Sean McRae, who meant the world to him. He was a proud Afi to Michael and Abigail Alculumbre, cherishing every moment spent with them. He is also survived by his dear sister, Karen McRae and will be fondly remembered by extended family and lifelong friends.

Born on June 11, 1959, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Mike was the beloved son of John and Jonina McRae and was adored by grandparents Theodore and Edna Peterson, Hrefna McRae, his great grandmother and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

As a youth in Montreal and Stanstead Quebec, Mike was a top student. He enjoyed skiing, was a hockey goalie, football player, and guitarist. Mike’s mischievous streak enabled him to always find creative ways to have fun with friends, yet somehow staying out of trouble!

At 17, Mike moved to Carp with his family where he restored his MG which he drove out to western and eastern Canada. He also began attending Carleton University while working numerous part-time jobs, developing skills as a door-to-door vacuum salesman, insulation installer, and bellhop, among others.

Mike had a background in science and law, however, ultimately chose to pursue a career as a Chartered Professional Accountant. After serving as a Senior Tax Manager at what was then called BDO, he took the leap into entrepreneurship, founding his own firm, Michael J. McRae, BA. CMA, CA Chartered Accountant. A renowned tax expert with an entrepreneurial spirit, Mike found others’ passion for their businesses contagious and would go to great lengths to help them succeed.

When his father became ill, Mike stepped in without hesitation, transitioning to the role of branch manager at Professional Investments. The change suited him well, drawing on his long-standing interest in financial markets and his dedication to delivering exceptional service. For him, the real rewards came not only from the work itself, but from the relationships, the loyal team he built around him and, the clients who placed their trust in him. Helping people was at the heart of everything Mike did, and it brought him genuine joy every single day.

Mike continued to enjoy travelling with family, restoring and driving cars, skiing, photography, woodworking, and perfecting the thin crust pizza! Mike was a truly remarkable man. He was quick witted, generous, compassionate, and respected by all who met him. Mike will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

We will gather to celebrate Mike’s life at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes 3440 Richmond Rd., (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd) Nepean. A funeral service will be on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at 1:00 pm, at the Garden Chapel, followed by a reception.

A donation in Mike’s honour to a charity of your choice or flowers are welcome.
