It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Dr Michael James Hiel on April 25th, 2024. Born on October 12th, 1946 in Ottawa.

It was at the University of Ottawa where he met the love of his life and best friend Nancy Hiel (nee Doherty) and to whom he was married to for 53 years. Lovingly remembered by his children: Daniel (Lesley), Stephanie, and David (Shannon). He will be missed by his grandchildren: Kieran, Benjamin, Grace and Milla.

He attended University of Ottawa for undergraduate studies and graduated from the University of Toronto Dental School in 1972. He then launched a successful 40 year dental career practicing in Kanata. 

He was quick to smile, loved good conversation, enjoyed a friendly debate, and was curious to the end of his days. Affectionally nicknamed “The Happy Wanderer,” he was content to explore with no true destination.  His greatest wandering adventure has now begun. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. 

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
