Retired R.N.

Graduate Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1956A

It is with heavy hearts that we sadly announce the passing of Mary Emma Armstrong. Daughter of the late Albert and Annie (nee Barton) Armstrong. Predeceased by her much loved brother, John Barton Armstrong. Beloved sister-in-law of Marion Armstrong; much loved and adored Aunt Mary to Lauree Armstrong and Krista Benn (Kevin); cherished Great Aunt Mary to Tyler (Nicole) and Justin Benn; and Great Great Aunt to Liam and Darcy Benn.  Cherished cousin to the Armstrong, Brownlee, Barton, Collins, Sheppard, and Wood clans.  Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her nieces and sister-in-law. She was a special friend, cousin and positive loving force in so many lives.

Mary worked at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for 37 years and always important to her was her sisterhood of nurses.  She also attended the University of Western Ontario and took training at John Hopkins Hospital.  She was a pivotal volunteer for decades with the Maycourt Club of Ottawa.  Blessed with an amazing memory, she was the keeper of family history.  Always artistic, her cross-stitching skills were like painting with thread.  A traveller, she spent her 80th birthday in Ghana. Acquiring an iPad in her 80s, she ZOOMed through the COVID pandemic constantly connecting to family, Maycourt, Alumnae and stitching groups.  She was always genuinely interested in what everyone was doing and her circle of friends never stopped growing.  Everyone loved Aunt Mary.  She was always there to nurture, guide and love us.  She was blessed to have so many know and love her.  She was the glue that bound many groups together.  We will have to work to keep all her beloved groups stitched together.  We will love and miss her always. Our family thanks the many caring doctors, and especially the caring and dedicated nurses and support staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital who cared for Aunt Mary.

Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Mary during a visitation at the Kars Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes,1610 Roger Stevens Dr., Kars on Monday, July 18th from 4 p.m to 7 p.m.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m. , followed by interment at Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, North Gower ON.  Respecting COVID protocols and the vulnerability of some, it would be appreciated if masks be worn.
