After a long and courageous battle with the scourge of Alzheimer' Disease, Margo Edwards (Wilson) died peacefully, with her loving husband, Ted Edwards, at her side.
She will be greatly missed by her three children; Karen (Mike), Joslyn (Scott) and Steven (Kristina) and her eight grandchildren; Jordan, Mason, Sophie, Skye, Hunter, Rowan, Riley and Spencer.
She is survived by her siblings Chris, Barrie, Sandra and Carol on Vancouver Island.
Margo's Dad, Barrie Morris, was a Canadian Air Force pilot and instructor so Margo spent most of her childhood moving from base to base, led by her Mom, Margaret. One year she attended three different schools. In 1960 the family moved to Ottawa and she attended Laurentian High School. When she graduated her family was posted to Comox. Margo decided to settle down here, in Ottawa, so she attended Teacher's College and then began her teaching career in the elementary program.
She met and married Denton Wilson and quickly began to produce her offspring, and put a halt to her teaching. After Steven was born, she attended Carleton University (often bringing Steve to class with her) and received her B.A. and then returned to teaching. She was drawn to students who had learning difficulties and got training in that area. She went to Broadview Public School in 1985 and taught Special Education to Grades 7 and 8 students, until her retirement in 2000. Margo had great empathy for others, and was a kind and loving person and she took great satisfaction in helping a large number of young people adjust and learn how to cope with whatever their learning issue was.
She and Denton separated in the early '80's, and later, just like in the movies, she attended Laurentian's 25th reunion and re-met Ted Edwards, whom she had dated a couple of times just prior to their graduation. They hit it off and in 1984 they bought a house together, lived "in sin" for a couple of years just to make sure it was the right move, and then married. They had a wonderful, happy, busy 41 years together.
Ted introduced Margo and her children to his favourite place on earth—-Red Pine Camp! The children and Margo loved it and the family attended every summer. Ted worked at the camp for a number of summers (he was a teacher too) and Margo happily joined him, living in a little wooden cabin for two months. In those years she became known as the "Camp Mom", working with and listening to, and helping the young women on staff with any issues that might have arisen.
Retirement through the 2000's allowed for winters in Florida, and many trips, including bus tours and cruises.
When the children married and grandchildren were produced, both Ted and Margo became very active and involved in their lives, which has continued to the present. Almost every year the grandkids and their parents joined them in Florida, producing great fun memories. They also took the grandkids to Camp for a week, without their parents, from age 6 to 16. This created a wonderful bond between them, and was a highlight of each year.
The family will be hosting a Celebration of Margo's life on Saturday, November 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Tubman's Funeral Home, at 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa, followed by a reception on site.
