Margaret Jean Smith

With sadness but in gratitude for a well-lived life, the family announces the peaceful passing of Margaret Jean Smith (née McDonald) on November 1, 2023, aged 96. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, but a proud Canadian, Margaret was the wife of the late Peter B. Smith (2011). Also predeceased by her parents, Richard McDonald and Jean McGregor, and sister Anna (late James McInnes). Margaret came to Canada in the 1950s to teach at Copper Cliff, Ontario, followed by a variety of DND schools, before settling in Ottawa. She later taught at Manordale Public School. A lifelong learner, avid reader and skilled quilter, Margaret was a much-loved role model for her children, Donald, Janice (Barry Stein) and Eric (Christine Lavergne), and grandchildren Nathaniel, Matthew and Katie Stein. Also survived by her nieces and nephew in Scotland. Margaret was grateful for the friendship and support of a close circle of friends and neighbours over the years, especially her dear friend Kathleen O’Shea.

A celebration of life will be held at Bells Corners United Church, 3955 Richmond Road on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 11 a.m. If desired, donations to the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association would be appreciated.
