Leonard Edward Petrie

Leonard Petrie passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, in his 93rd year. Beloved husband of 68 years of the late Shirley Petrie, dear father of Valerie McTaggart (Robin), Larry Petrie (Barb), Marcia Scott (Chris), and Ross Petrie (Leann). Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Katie and Michael, Chelsie (David) and Brianne (Jordon), Rachel (Myles) and Abbey (Tom), and great-granddaughters, Quinn and Lennie. Leonard was predeceased by his parents Edward and Leoneda Petrie and his grandson Lyle.

Leonard grew up in Winnipeg and was a proud graduate of the University of Manitoba earning his Master’s of Engineering.

After moving to Ottawa, Leonard worked with the Federal Government including an extraordinary chapter as a member of the Alouette project team, which led to the launch of Canada’s first satellite, Alouette 1, in 1962. We were all so proud of his contribution to this important milestone in Canadian history.

Driven by a deep passion for engineering applications, Leonard served as an Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) representative, working extensively throughout the world. As the founder of his own telecommunications company, he took immense pride in his work. Notably, his business helped establish essential radio networks for remote communities in Canada’s Arctic, a testament to his dedication and skill.

He was known for his boisterous laugh, which could carry across the neighbours’ yards and hugs that made everyone feel deeply loved. Memories of Leonard are forever tied to the frequent road trips to Winnipeg, the thrill of racing go-carts down St. Remy, skiing the local Ottawa hills and paddling a canoe through Algonquin Park. Leonard and Shirley embraced every opportunity to explore and experience the world. Sharing those adventures with family and friends brought them great joy, and seeing the world together was always a pleasure.

The family wishes to thank the Bridlewood Trails Retirement Community staff for their caring and compassion.

A Celebration of Leonard’s Life will be held Tubman Funeral Home Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Road, on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm.

As per Leonard’s wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Ottawa for the advancement of medicine through anatomical study.

Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, a contribution to the Dementia Society of Ottawa, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
