Michael Drennan, aged 84, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, in Kanata, Ontario, due to complications of vascular dementia.
Born on September 24, 1941, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Michael was the beloved son of the late Ian Hugh Drennan (1986) and Beryl Elizabeth Hemenway Drennan (2002). He was raised in Winnipeg alongside his brothers, Hugh and Terry, forming the strong family bonds that remained central throughout his life.
Michael earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1963, beginning a distinguished career in Ottawa as an Electrical Engineer with General Dynamics Mission Systems (formerly Computing Devices Canada). Over more than four decades, he contributed to numerous significant projects, most notably his work on the LAV RECCE (Light Armoured Vehicle Reconnaissance). He took great pride in his profession and was widely respected for his technical expertise, integrity, and commitment to excellence. Michael was known for ensuring that everything he worked on met the highest standards, a principle that guided both his professional and personal life. He retired in October 2006.
In 1975, Michael married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Drennan. Together they built a warm and welcoming home in Stittsville, Ontario, where they shared over fifty years of marriage. He was a devoted husband and a proud father to Steven (Jacinda), Kim, and Christine. He was a cherished grandfather to Abby deBrum, and to Kate and Lily Cook, who brought him immense joy and pride. He will also be greatly missed by his brothers, Hugh (Mary) and Terry, as well as his extended family.
Outside of his career, Michael embraced an active and hands-on life. He enjoyed playing squash and golf, camping with his family, and taking on home renovation projects. He found simple pleasure in tending his yard, feeding the local wildlife from his deck, and cooking meals on the barbecue. Whatever he undertook, he approached with care, precision, and a determination to solve any problem.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength and unwavering dedication to doing things properly. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply and in the values of hard work, integrity, and excellence that he instilled in those around him.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no service. His family takes comfort in the many memories shared and the lasting impact he made in their lives.
