Dr. Jeremiah McCarthy

September 18, 1947 — April 28, 2024

With deep sadness and sorrow, the McCarthy family announces the passing of their patriarch: Dr. Jeremiah McCarthy, who died surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, April 28, 2024, in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 76.

Born in Woodquay, Galway, Ireland in 1947, he shared 56 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Dymphna (nee Healy). Jeremiah leaves behind a legacy cherished by his wife, Dymphna, and his children: Dr. Colin McCarthy (Angela), Sheila Hynes (Declan), Christine Butler (Terry), and Jeremiah McCarthy (junior). He will forever remain in the adoring hearts of his five grandchildren: Qwynn, Sloane, Cian, Annalise, and Alannah. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Patrick MacCarthy (Helen), and sister Catherine Killeen (Steve). Jeremiah was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Margaret (nee Waldron), and his siblings: Michael, James, Eugene (Nora), Eileen (David), Mary, and Peggy (Bob).

Growing up in Galway, where Jeremiah met the love of his life, Dymphna, he enrolled in medical school at the University College Galway, specializing in Radiology. In 1980, with three children in tow, together they embarked on an adventure that took them from Ireland to Canada, settling in Newfoundland where they welcomed a fourth child.

Jeremiah’s illustrious 40 year medical career saw him relocate his family four times to various regions of Newfoundland, finally settling on the southern coast in 1990. He retired as Chief of Radiology in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication and excellence in health and patient care.

Once retired, Jeremiah and Dymphna eventually settled in Ottawa, Ontario, near the city’s historic canal and cultural attractions. An adventurer at heart, he continued his worldly travels, enjoyed hitting the links, found a passion for playing the banjo, and continued spinning captivating tales.

Above all, Jeremiah treasured his family, generously and unequivocally supporting and encouraging their educational and recreational endeavours. His five cherished grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, sharing in countless moments of fishing, biking, crazy golf, playing chess, reading bedtime stories, playing cards, enjoying ice cream cones and simply being together.

Jeremiah will be fondly remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, son, granddad, and esteemed physician, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

We love you, Oíche mhaith a dhuit!
