James Theodore Slobodian

October 2, 1930 — November 21, 2024

Our dear dad passed away quietly and comfortably on November 21 at the age of 94. He was blessed to be well loved all of his life and loved life in return. He had a happy life. Educated at Ottawa Tech, he always loved to work with his hands, in the labs at the National Research Council and then Atomic Energy of Canada / Theratronics; in his incredibly well-stocked shop and garage where he tinkered and built; at the camp and in the garden. Like his grandmother and mother before him, he liked a rocking chair, playing euchre and an unending flow of sweets. His Catholic faith was true and deep.

He was predeceased by his mom, Margaret Maloney, of Cantley, QC; his dad John (Jack) Slobodian of Galicia, Glory to Ukraine; and his brothers John and Edgar. His darling Eileen McConville passed away in 2017, on the cusp of their 60th anniversary. He is survived by his brother Gerald (Marcelle Hubert); his cousin Evelyn Maloney; in-laws Claudette and Tom McConville; Sunanda and Ashoke Pacey; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His children will miss him terribly: Louise (Richard Cohen) and Michael (Marian).

The family offers great thanks to the staff of Valley Stream Manor for the excellent care of Mom and Dad stretching over 10 years. For the last year, the third floor was his safe haven. Thank you also to Carefor. Dad had many companions to brighten up his days. We are grateful to you all. Special mention to niece Peggy, nephew Tim and to Marilyn and Vimal. Dementia reduced Dad’s capacity for many years but you all helped him enjoy his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations to help create a more just world through Development and Peace or the Shepherds of Good Hope.

All are welcome to the services. There will be a visitation on Tuesday, November 26, from 7-9 p.m. at Tubman Funeral Homes - Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean ON. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, 3891 Old Richmond Rd, Nepean, ON, followed by a reception in the church hall. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery, the same day, November 27.

Dad loved his silly jokes and there is no better way to say farewell than to remind you, as he did many many times: One egg is un oeuf!
