James Arnold Moffatt

October 16, 1927 — August 23, 2025

Peacefully on 23 August 2025 with his beloved wife Peggy at his side. Predeceased by parents Arnold and Alta Moffatt and by brothers Richard, Allan, and Robert. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, Craig and Judy Moffatt, Karen and Dave Loucks, Eleanor and John Logan, John Moffatt and Thomas, Marilyn and Robert Moffatt. Jim was born and grew up in Cumberland, Ontario.

He was a founding member and Past President of the Cumberland Curling Club. Jim and his curling team represented the Club in many tournaments over the years throughout the Ottawa Valley. He was an Emeritus Member and Past President of the Governor General's Curling Club (inducted in 1978). This Club recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to curling during their lifetime. Jim was also a member for more than 50 years of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club and served as Men’s Captain in 1987-88.

Jim joined the Navy for 5 years in l946 and then in 1951 he began a long-term career with the Government, starting with the Defense Research Board and then the Department of Communications. Jim was named as one of only 25 Canadian “space pioneers “ for his work on the many space programs he was involved with, including Canada's first satellite, Alouette, launched in September 1962.

Jim and Peggy travelled extensively after their retirement, including golf in every Province in Canada and many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and of course, the US

They moved to the Ravines Senior's Suites Retirement Residence in 2013 and enjoyed many years, and made many new friends there. A very special thank you to ALL the staff at the Ravines for all their kind help and support. Also, a very big thank you to Jim’s family doctor for over 30 years, Dr. Barbara Yates, and Kate MacKenzie from Bayshore Health Care, who supported us through a very difficult time.

There will be a private inurnment at Dale’s Cemetery in Cumberland at a later date, and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Ravines in September.

Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
