James Campbell

March 9, 1948 — August 2, 2025

James Campbell, a respected economist and longtime executive with Natural Resources Canada, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Glasgow on March 9, 1948, James was a Scotsman through and through. His humour was sharp. In difficult times, he reverted to his Scottish accent. In the last few months of his life, James reverted completely to Scottish. From a young age James was an avid outdoorsman. He loved being in the woods or on the water. This was an interest he would share and foster in both his family and friends.

James devoted his life to public service and economic policy. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Sir George Williams University before advancing to his doctoral studies in economics at Queen’s University. His distinguished career with Natural Resources Canada was marked by a deep sense of purpose, thoughtful leadership, and unwavering dedication to the public good. James is lovingly remembered by his wife, Helen McLachlen. Who will miss him terribly. He is survived by his brother Charlie (Margaret) and his sister Linda (Grant), and was predeceased by his beloved parents, Patrick and Teresa, his dearest sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Andy. He was a cherished brother-in-law to Angela (Paul), David (Dawn), Philip (Mimi), Kevin, Janet (Allan) and Bobbi.

He was a proud and caring uncle to James (Lisa), Susan, Ronnie (Sandra), Mary (David), Patrick (Karriane), Kevin (Kimberley), Tiffany (James), Jennifer (Stephane), Jason (Poonam), Geordie, Robin (Jen), Lily (Paul), Rose (Art), Shameen, Taylor, Shay, Izaak, and Nolan. James was also a very fond great-uncle to Brendan (Jenna), Emma (Richard), Rachel (Ryan), Charlie, Alex, Oliviaa, Morgan, Carys, Connor, Carson, Brianne (Jake), Dylan, Duke, Marie-Anne, Catherine, Darshanaa, Millan, Emily, Simon, Dawn, Luna, Finley, London, Carrington, Lawson, Holland, George, Theodore, and Frances. James had wonderful memorable times with his close friends Chris, Sue, Guy, and the late Jeffrey. James also touched the lives of many friends and extended family from around the world who visited over the years whether he met them once or many times. James also enjoyed spending time with his wonderful and reliable neighbours Diane & Fred, Cheryl & Bob Kathy & Bob and Rose & Mike. The warmth of these and many other lifelong connections was a meaningful part of James's life.

James will be remembered for his intellect, wit, and kindness. With a strong moral compass, he approached life with curiosity, compassion, and a deep love for his family and friends. He loved being in the woods and was happiest at home sitting in front of a fire with a dog or two by his side. He enjoyed feeding the deer and the birds and travelling with his dogs up to Kinburn to buy more seeds. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched – animal and human.

A private celebration of James’ life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Almonte General Hospital, where James was cared for in the last weeks of his life.
