Born in Denmark almost 100 years ago, Ida Handfield-Jones grew up in Copenhagen with her beloved brother, Ib. After the war and occupation, Ida went to work in Oxford where she met her husband, Steve. Shortly after their marriage in 1950, they emigrated to Canada, starting out in Halifax, and then moving to Ottawa. The family also spent four years in Washington D.C. where Steve received a diplomatic posting. They enjoyed their retirement years in the Almonte area, including building an extensive prize-winning garden at their property, Ironwood. Ida moved into a retirement home 15 years ago, shortly after her husband died.
Ida was an artist. Throughout her life, she pursued a variety of artistic endeavours, including graphic design, painting, embroidery, floral arrangement, and handmade craft businesses. She worked hard to make her homes and gardens beautiful – a source of great pride.
Family was very important to Ida. She was proud of her three children and enjoyed spending time with them through her many years. Her Danish heritage was an essential part of her – there was always a candle nearby and hearts on the Christmas tree. She was intelligent and curious, whether enjoying nature or observing the world around her.
Cheerful, dynamic and independent into her last year, Ida died on July 18th after a brief illness. She leaves behind her children, Carol, Richard and Helen, and their families. Ida often said that she lived a very good life.
Thank you to the staff at The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus for their wonderful palliative care during Ida’s last few days. Thank you to Dr. Claudia Hubbes, her family physician of many years, for her excellent care. And thank you to all the staff at Amica Westboro Park who made Ida’s life there so enjoyable.
A private family memorial celebration will be held in August.
A donation to a charity of choice can be made if desired.
