Harold Everton Flake

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Everton Flake, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, in his 98th year, surrounded by the love of his family.

Harold was the beloved husband of Margaret Carole Flake (née Patterson) and devoted father of Kimberly (Oleh). He was a loving and proud grandfather to Kristin and Alexander (Elaine), and a cherished great-grandfather to Estelle. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Vern Flake (Lois), and his sister, Helen Peterson, as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Born in Clarendon Township on May 24, 1929, and raised in Plevna, Harold spent his entire life in the Ottawa region. In 1956, he married Carole, and together they shared more than 69 years of marriage built on deep affection and unwavering devotion to one another.

A hardworking entrepreneur, Harold built two successful businesses: Pinnacle Construction, specializing in sewer and watermain construction, and Harold E. Flake Limited, a wholesale lumber company. Through dedication, perseverance, and integrity, he earned the respect of colleagues, customers, and friends throughout the region.

Harold enjoyed spending summers at the family cottage on the Rideau River and winters in Florida. He will be remembered for many things, but most especially for his determination and strength of character, his wonderful sense of humour, and his remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met. A deeply faithful man, Harold lived his beliefs through humility, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Harold found joy in many things; however, he was particularly passionate about forests and trees, as well as anything related to trucks, tractors, and automobiles. He loved driving—and being driven—throughout rural Ottawa, enthusiastically identifying every tree along the way, commenting on its health, and explaining how it might best be used once harvested. He also enjoyed visiting farms, construction sites, and local fairs to admire both old and new machinery, often reminiscing about how much easier farming and construction would have been in his younger days with the modern equipment available today.

He took great pride in his automobiles, keeping them impeccably clean and meticulously maintained, often on a daily basis. As part of his routine, he would park well away from other vehicles to avoid even the smallest ding.

Harold was also a man who appreciated good food, though nothing compared to his love of Pepsi and chocolates. Hardly a day passed without an afternoon snack of Pepsi and a sweet treat. It was a simple pleasure he continued to enjoy right through his final days.

In keeping with Harold’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service to celebrate a life well lived will be held at a later date.

For those wishing, donations in Harold’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
