Gus MacMullin

July 8, 1944 — April 29, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, Angus Joseph (Gus) MacMullin. Gus was born on July 8, 1944, in Pipers Cove, Nova Scotia, to the late Malcolm and Mary (MacKenzie) MacMullin. Enormously grateful and blessed for the time we shared are his wife, Michelle Takacs, his two daughters Kim and Kerry, stepdaughter Erika, and son Glen. Gus will be missed by his brothers – Roddie and Jackie, and his sisters Sarah, Barbara, Dena, Delores, Florence, Lucina, Theresa and Arlene. Gus is also survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gus was predeceased by his brothers Sander, Norman, Raymond, Hector and Lyle.

He was born into a hard-working, fun-loving family of 16 children that lived on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lakes where Gus and his brothers spent their days fishing, swimming, splitting wood, farming, tinkering with cars and being “up to no good”. His childhood no doubt fostered his work ethic and his desire to always help his family, friends, and neighbours. We loved hearing his countless stories of growing up in Pipers Cove; he loved telling them, and they were such a part of him.

Gus began his career with Sydney Steel Corporation before leaving Cape Breton at 22 to join Northern Telecom and eventually Bell Canada in Montreal. He lived there for 10 years before moving to Ottawa where he spent the next 50 years. Gus spent over 40 years in telecommunications, after which he worked as a carpenter and painter right up until his death at age 80. He was incredibly healthy and active until he fell ill suddenly in January of this year.

Gus was many things to many people. He had an innate ability to make everyone around him feel special. Whether it was a phone call or text message for a birthday, or a check-in during difficult times, he had the ability to brighten your day with his kind words, often when you needed it most. He would say “Always know how much you are loved”, and then quietly go about making sure you knew it was true. We will miss his unmatched sense of humour and jokes.

Thank you to the family and friends who provided us with endless support and such genuine kindness as we navigated through the last few months of Gus’s life. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
