Elizabeth Humphreys

February 14, 1927 — July 12, 2022

“Elizabeth Eleanore Humphreys”, (aka Mum, Nanna, Aunty El) age 95, of Ottawa previously of London and Longlac, On, passed away quietly on July 12, 2022 at Arnprior hospital.

Eleanore was born and raised in Toronto, daughter of the late Harold Edgar Davies and Elizabeth Alleyne Davies (nee Calvert). Eleanore was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years “Jim” Ernest Reginald Humphreys 1992 and both her sons, Robert 1952 and Paul Humphreys 2020.

Eleanore is survived by her daughter Janice Hamilton (Alan Smart), daughter-in-law Margo Humphreys, and sister-in-law Marlene Davies. She was a loving Grandmother to Erin Hamilton of Ottawa (Mark Wolk), Meg Jarvis of London (AJ Jarvis), Andy Humphreys of Edmonton (Jenna Geddes), and David Humphreys of Penticton. Eleanore was blessed to be Great Grandmother to Ripley and Lyra-sky. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Eleanore graduated U of Toronto with a degree in Occupational Therapy. May 12, 1951, Eleanore and the late “Jim” Ernest Reginald Humphreys, (also a U of T graduate – in Forestry) from Alymer On, were married in Toronto. Their wedding trip was to Boston and their new home was a small bush camp cabin with no indoor plumbing outside of Longlac in north-western Ontario. They survived a year in the bush, then moved into town to a small 3 bedroom house in Longlac. Two more moves in Longlac had them finally living in a beautiful 4 bedroom house on the lake. Retirement was a move to London where they purchased and renovated a home in Byron. After 10 years on Jarvis Street, Jim and Eleanore felt having both a cottage and large city property were too much work so they reluctantly sold the house and moved into a town house across from Springbank Park. After Jim’s death in 1992, Eleanore wanted to downsize and moved into a lovely 2 bedroom apartment in the same complex. Finally, after 25 years of living on her own, Eleanore made the decision to move to Kanata and live with her daughter Janice and family.

Eleanore was a member of the St John’s in the Wilderness Church in Longlac, St Aidan’s Anglican Church in London, and the Norway Point Community Church in Lake of Bays. Eleanore loved to sing and play the piano – she enjoyed everything from musicals, easy listening, to classical and opera. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed all crafts, sewing, embroidery, flower gardening, swimming, skiing, reading, card games (bridge, cribbage & contract rummy) and of course loved lazy summer afternoons on the dock!

Eleanore’s other passion was travel - exploring Canada and the US on road trips, visiting family and friends in Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Bolivia, and trips to Europe and the Caribbean with her good friend Eileen.

A celebration of life for Eleanore Humphreys will be held on Saturday August 20, 2022, between 11am and 1pm at the family cottage, 1067 Glenmount Road, Lake of Bays Ontario. We welcome all friends and family to come and share memories with us.
