Edward Frank Schneider

September 21, 1928 — July 25, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ed (Eddie) Schneider who passed away peacefully on July 25th after suffering a stroke. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was 96. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Elsie Schneider, his sister Joan Schneider and his brothers Fred and Dick Schneider. He is survived by his wife Nolie, his children Shona and Alec and his grandchildren Liam and Aiden and his brother Bob Schneider along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ed was born in Garfield, New Jersey on September 21st, 1928. He served in the US Armed Forces before going to Cornell University on the GI bill. He earned his PhD at Rutgers University where he met his future wife, Nolie Millar. They moved to Ottawa, Ontario where he worked as a research scientist in plant pathology and physiology at the Central Experimental Farm for over 30 years. He loved his garden, cooking, reading and woodworking. He built a second story on his house and much of the furnishings within, constructed with silky oak brought back from a sabbatical in Australia. He read every John Grisham mystery, picked up in the used book sections of his favourite thrift stores. He played broomball and was on a recreational curling team, loved watching football especially the New York Giants and coached his children's softball teams.

Ed was fiercely independent, continuing to drive, running up and down to Bells Corners in his little Honda Fit for cooking and gardening supplies. He cooked complete dinners for the family and maintained his beautiful flower and vegetable garden despite a fractured knee suffered a few days earlier after slipping outside. Most people would take that as a cue to sit down, but not him! He was a kind and giving person who loved stopping to talk to neighbors along the road, pet their dogs and ask about their children. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Ed's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Bruyère-Saint Vincent Hospital and the Neurology department at the Civic who provided exceptional comfort and care.

The family would like to gather friends and neighbours for a celebration of Ed’s life on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, surrounded by the garden he loved and was known for. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided, however you are invited to bring a potluck appetizer, salad, dessert, or beverage of your choice. Please RSVP by emailing shonaschneider@gmail.com for directions and additional details.

Donations in Ed's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Bruyère-Saint Vincent Hospital would be greatly appreciated by the family.
