Edward Franklin Pope

Passed away peacefully in the presence of his eldest son and caregiver at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, December 17, 2025.

Frank was born into a farm family having roots in Prince Edward County and Halton County Ontario. He graduated as an Aggie from Guelph University, continuing his studies with master’s degree field work in entomology, but leaving with a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics. Having completed school, he found work with the Federal Public Service starting with Agriculture Canada and moving to Statistics Canada where he spent most of a long career.

A life-long naturalist, Frank served with the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club in a variety of capacities, including successful efforts to conserve the Alfred Bog. He enjoyed cycling, hiking, and cross-country skiing, and reading about scientific, economic, travel, and political subjects. He enjoyed staying up to date with family, notably his nieces and nephews, and his neighbours.

Frank was a very supportive husband to wife Doreen Hostrawser and father to children Stephen and Timothy. He participated in his children’s activities, serving as a sports coach and cub leader. The Pope family moved to the new Lynwood Village in Bells Corners in 1959 and both Frank and Doreen were active in the Bells Corners United Church.

Frank lived in the family home until the very end. He survived his wife Doreen, sisters Margaret and Mary, and brothers Dan and Harold. He is survived by his sister Karyl and his sons Stephen and Timothy.

Visitation will be held at Tubman Funeral Home Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Road, on Saturday, January 10, 2025, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Internment will be at the Bells Corners Union Cemetery in the spring, with a celebration of life planned for a later date.
