BARKLEY Dwight James
With great sadness we announce that Dwight Barkley passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, in his 97th year. Loving husband of Edith (nee Scott) of 65 years. Devoted father to Cheryl, Jeff (Jane Eveleigh), Bob (Heather Skanes), and Leigh. Proud and supportive grandpa to Jessie, Charlie, Chelsea, Curtis, Owen, Jake, and Emma. Cherished brother of the late Robert “Bob” (Fran) and the late Evelina Barkley, brother-in-law of Delbert Scott (Claudette) and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Dwight James Barkley was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1928. As a boy he spent many summers in Ferguson Falls, camping and fishing with his father, and soon after rented a cottage along the Mississippi River. Once a married man, he brought his own children to the cottage to swim and fish, and later his grandchildren joined on the tradition of summers on the Mississippi.
He graduated from Carleton University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science and later worked as a chemist for the Energy Mines and Resources department of the Government of Canada. After work, “Brewmaster” Dwight spent much of his time in his vegetable garden or making wine, cooking and cheering on the Sens. Dwight would spend weekends at the cottage preparing elaborate family meals. He shared his love of making pasta with his grandchildren and introduced them to their favorite kind of pizza — potato pizza!
In his retirement, Dwight stayed busy, his love of living never diminishing. He golfed, curled, traveled Europe with Edith, and went to Algonquin College for wood working and wine making. Dwight enjoyed stopping by his local pub and socializing with those he crossed paths with. He often brought his sons and grandchildren with him and proudly introduced them to whoever knew his name (everyone!) He spent the last of his life surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and pets in his family home, full of laughter, good food and drink, and love.
