It is with great sadness that we announce that Dorothy Shaw (nee Crowe) passed away peacefully at the age of 85. She is survived by her beloved husband Michael, her daughter Lynda (Bertrand), her son Ian (Michele) and her grandchildren Ben, Gen, Ethan, and Graham.

Dorothy was born in Lancashire, England, the youngest daughter of John and Dorothy Crowe. She spent her childhood at Hampsfield Farm near the village of Cartmel in Cumbria. She is predeceased by her brothers James and John as well as her sister Marjorie. Dorothy completed her S.R.N (State Registered Nurse) and S.C.M (State Certified Midwife) training at Preston Royal Infirmary and immigrated to Canada in 1963. She worked at the Ottawa Civic Hospital until marrying and becoming a mother. In 1966, she married Michael Shaw and embarked on a life of love and adventure.

Aside from being a devoted wife and mother, Dorothy enjoyed sports and the outdoors. She was a member of the Ottawa Tennis club and the Ottawa West Granite curling club. As a member of the senior women's curling team, she won the Ontario Seniors championship in 1991 and went on to compete in the Canadian championship in Victoria, B.C.

Dorothy liked hiking and she walked the Rideau trail from Ottawa to Kingston. She also walked trails in New Zealand, Alaska, and Costa Rica. Michael and Dorothy camped in all Canadian provinces, sleeping in a tent each time. Dorothy also enjoyed bird watching and helped Michael maintain a bluebird trail.

This is the first verse of Dorothy’s favorite poem. Enjoy and think of her fondly.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Wordsworth

A heartfelt thanks to the staff at Peter D. Clarke for the wonderful care over the years.
