LANG, Dorothy Marion (née Hutt) - Age 89, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at the Almonte General Hospital in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. Born on July 21, 1936, in Ottawa, Ontario, Dorothy lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to her family, her career in education, and her many passions.
Dorothy pursued her education at Glebe Collegiate and Teachers’ College and began her teaching career with the Ottawa Public School system. She initially taught Grade 2 at First Avenue, W.E. Gowling, and Bayview schools before transitioning to Special Education in1968. Dorothy’s dedication to her students was evident throughout her tenure at Pinecrest, Woodroffe, and Christie Public Schools until her retirement in 1991. Her commitment to nurturing young minds left a lasting impact on countless students over the years.
Family was central to Dorothy’s life. She is lovingly remembered by her children Robert (Bob) Lang (Jennifer) and Karen Martin (Eric). Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren Christopher Lang (Sheada), Meghan Martin (Mitchell “Mitch” Maestre), Jenna Dugdale (Tony), and Joey Bittle (Melissa), as well as her greatgrandchildren Ana Lang, Anders Lang, Cru Bradley, Brianna Dugdale, Mia Dugdale, Chloe Dugdale, Maxen Bittle, Mikael Bittle, and Maya Bittle. Dorothy was predeceased by her partner Ronald Barry Green; former husband Douglas Ivan Lang; parents Melvin Wilfred Floyd Hutt and Jessie Marion Hutt (née Richardson); brothers Lloyd Hutt (Margaret) and Charles Hutt (Betty); and beloved granddaughter Jenna Lang.
Dorothy’s summers were often spent at the family cottage in Beachgrove, Quebec, on the Ottawa River. These times were filled with joy as she created lasting memories with her children during their formative years. A devoted “Hockey Mom” to Bob during his years with the Ottawa West Golden Knights (Peewee), Pinecrest Selects, and the Caribou Canadians, and a proud “Figure Skating Mom” to Karen through her involvement with the Nepean Skating Club, Dorothy could always be found cheering from the sidelines at hockey games or figure skating competitions.
Travel was another of Dorothy’s great joys. She embarked on numerous adventures across Canada and the United States with a particular fondness for Holland America cruises—completing an impressive thirteen voyages. Dancing brought additional delight to Dorothy’s life; she enjoyed ballroom, square, and round dancing with her partner Ronald Green throughout the Ottawa Valley. She will also be deeply missed by her many dance friends and the many personal friendships she cherished throughout her life.
Known for her warm smile and engaging conversations, Dorothy had a gift for connecting with those around her. Whether at the rink supporting her children or sharing stories during travels abroad, she left an indelible impression on everyone she met.
Dorothy resided at the Halcyon and the Redwoods Retirement Residence in Ottawa, Maple Ridge Retirement Community in Carleton Place, and lastly at Almonte Country Haven, where she was cared for with kindness and compassion. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at these residences for the care, support, and friendship shown to Dorothy during her time there.
