Doris Porter

September 26, 1925 — November 6, 2022

Doris Jean (nee Ouderkirk)

Doris passed away peacefully at Perley Health on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at the age of 97.

Our wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother will be missed by her children Andrew (Janet), Gary, Susan (John), and Leslie (Donny). She is at the heart of many wonderful memories for her grandchildren, who knew her as Grandma Jean: Katy (Maxi), Jesse, Kinsey (Jack), Holli (Curtis), Stuart, Syarah, Ivy, and Cameron.  Doris will live on in our memories, which we will share with her great grandsons, Gray and Jack.

Doris was predeceased by her cherished husband of 45 years, Robert Douglas Porter in 1993. Doug and Doris both served in World War II and married in 1947. They settled in Hull, Quebec and later moved to Kanata, Ontario to raise their family.

Doris never stopped giving to those she loved. She liked nothing better than bringing people together to share her amazing meals and baked goods.  She enjoyed a good road trip with anyone willing to join her on an adventure. In the summers she liked cottage life and, in the winter, ski trips.  She loved a challenging game of bridge, a really good cup of tea, and laughing with friends and family. Doris’s knitting, quilts, and flower gardens were works of art. She loved beauty and order.

Doris is remembered with affection by the Bulmer family – Caroline, Fred, Emily, and Megan – as an important part of their father and grandfather’s life. Doris and Jim Moore were steadfast companions for 12 years until Jim’s death in 2012.

Doris is survived by her sister, “Billie” McNutt of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. She is predeceased by her parents, Earl and Clara (MacIntosh) Ouderkirk, and by her siblings Keith Ouderkirk, Dale Ouderkirk, Sybil Blair, Lorna Reightleg, Ruth Cramb, and Iva Kimberly.

Doris was particularly close to her nephews, Terry, Richard, and Peter Blair.

She was a wonderful caretaker for Auntie Rose, Aunt Mary, and Aunt Ruth and a devoted member of Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Stittsville.

Doris’s family is grateful to the outstanding staff at Perley Health and for the excellent care she received during her last years.

Friends may call at the Carp Chapel of Tubman Funeral Home, 115 Rivington St., Carp, on Sunday, November 13th from 2pm to 5pm.  A private burial of the urn will take place at a later date.
