Donald John Alfred Brawley, aged 89, passed away on November 4, 2024, at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, due to complications from COVID-19. Born on June 27, 1935, Don's life was marked by his dedication to his family and a distinguished career that spanned many decades.
Don grew up on a farm, a foundation that instilled in him the values of hard work and commitment. These values carried him through a successful career at the Bank of Montreal, where he started as a teenager and progressed through positions in Owen Sound, Elliott Lake, Sudbury, Brockville, Ottawa, Lansdowne, Toronto, Prescott, Sault Ste Marie, and finally Barrie. His career was not just a job but a lifetime journey that he cherished deeply.
In his retirement, Don could frequently be found on the golf course, enjoying the summer days and the camaraderie of the game. This hobby was one of his great joys, providing him with relaxation and lasting friendships.
Don was a beloved figure in his community and a pillar of strength for his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean; his daughter Wendy and son-in-law David Cunliffe; his brothers Jim (Shirley) Brawley and Mike (Michelle) Brawley; his brother-in-law Jack McGinnis; his sisters-in-law Erma Rowsome and Betty Hogaboam; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes Jean and Winfield Edward Brawley; his sister Barbara Bernier; his brother-in-law Gerald Bernier; his sister Joan McGinnis; his nephew Chris Bernier; his brother-in-law Gerald Rowsome; and his brother-in-law Glenn Hogaboam.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Ferris Lane in Barrie on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 4 to 8 pm. In memory of Don, contributions may be made to the RVH Research Institute at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, Ontario.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Kotchetkov, Nurse Chris Pierog at the RVH; Nurse Becky, and caregivers Jaimie, Tara, Michelle, Nez, Keith, Janet, and Laura, as well as his neighbours on Aldergrove Circle, who provided immeasurable support and care over the past few years.
