Derek Yu

Derek Yu passed away peacefully into his Lord's presence  at home surrounded by his family on February 23 2024. He battled cancer in 2019 and again in 2023. 

Derek was a committed engineer in telecommunications working on emergent technologies. His career took him through BNR as a co-op student in Ottawa where he completed his Masters studies in Digital In-building Wireless Systems. He transitioned his work to Nortel Networks in the wireless division where he held many patents. His most recent work was in 5G at Ericsson. 

Derek had a passion for DIY projects focusing on serving the needs of his family. His other interests included photography, biking and singing. He used God’s gift of singing to serve at the Chinese Alliance churches in Montreal, Waterloo and Ottawa. 

Derek is survived by his wife Janice; sons Tim (Gloria) and Chris; siblings She Fei (late Wai Chu), Fok Pui (Shu Zhen), Aldus (Katie) and Eric (Annie). He is predeceased by his parents Sui Wan and Mi Fong, and his brother Fok Wai. Special thanks to his palliative care team, Dr. Jennings (CPMA) and nurse Cindy (St. Elizabeth), who showed compassionate care to him and his family. 

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in Derek’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Ottawa Hospital, or The Ottawa Chinese Alliance Church.
