On a clear and sunny morning in May 2025, David Stephen Wood passed away, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 52 years old.
Dave was the first child of Peter and Susan (Deacon), followed by his brother, Tim. He was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where he attended Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School on Carsons Road. During his time at Sir Wil, Dave was known as “Woody” for his outgoing nature, his role as Head Boy, and his prowess on the rugby pitch.
Dave went on to study psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa before relocating to Toronto to raise his daughter, Kat.
His lifelong interest in computers and technology led him to a career in IT with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. His impeccable talent for problem-solving and his ability to bring people together made him an integral part of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. More than anything, he will be remembered by his colleagues for his satirical wit, dedication, empathy, humour, and above all—his friendship.
Dave’s passions extended far beyond his career. He brought immense joy to family and friends with his gift for the keyboard. His unique musical style made even the best-known classics by Billy Joel and Gordon Lightfoot sound like Dave Wood originals. He filled every room not just with music, but with laughter—his theatrical flair could have drawn a chuckle from John Cleese or Billy Connolly.Above all else, Dave was a beloved dad, son, brother, nephew, cousin, colleague, and friend. He will also be deeply missed by his adoring partner, Cheryl.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Terry Fox Foundation (https://terryfox.org/ways-to-give/) would be greatly appreciated.
All are welcome to celebrate Dave’s life at High Park Brewery, 839 Runnymede Road, Toronto, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025. A service will take place at 3:00 p.m., where friends are invited to share memories and stories of Dave.
