David Julian Lanceman died peacefully on August 5, 2025, at the age of 97 in Ottawa. We had hoped he would make it to 100. He didn’t quite get there, but he lived a very long and happy life.
Born in London, England, David and his sisters Jean (aka Miriam) and Audrey were evacuated as children to the country village of Balsham to escape the WW2 bombings of London. After the war, David trained for electrical work, a skill that briefly led him to work on Sunderland Flying Boats in Singapore during his postwar mandatory military service.
Back in England he met June, the love of his life who was to become his wife. They emigrated to Canada, got married, and raised their two sons, Mark and Paul, initially living in Hull (Gatineau) and eventually moving to their Kanata home on Country Lane.
David’s career as an Engineering Technologist was dedicated to power and lighting projects for various firms, including a notable tenure with National Defence. His work often took him to unique locations, including the Diefenbunker and far-flung sites like Alert.
David was truly interested in everything. He had a deep love for music and a gift for making people laugh with his jokes (he appreciated a captive audience!). He sang in various choirs for decades , including barbershop groups. He maintained a daily routine of exercise and walks until his final year. After June's passing and his move to Stonehaven Retirement Manor, he found new interests and passions. During Covid, he filled in for the newspaper delivery person, and continued this for several years for the exercise. He dedicated a great deal of time creating and running a weekly classical music appreciation evening for the other manor residents to enjoy.
David is survived by his sons, Mark (Tina Bucciarelli) and Paul (Val Braun), and his grandchildren, Stefan, Natasha, Dana, and Jaden. He is predeceased by his wife, June.
