David Ronald Graham

January 22, 1942 — August 16, 2025

It is with love and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Ron. For 42 years, a loving partner to Jean Prebble, a cherished stepfather to Rob Prebble (Chantal), and an adored grandfather to James and Casey.

Predeceased by his parents, David and Christina Graham, and siblings Hugh Graham and Maureen Butcher. Ron was deeply saddened by the death of his stepson, Steve, in 2013. He is survived by in-laws Brian Eastop (Donna), Pat Grierson (David), and Debbie Eastop, along with numerous nieces and nephews in Ottawa and Toronto.

Born and raised in Toronto, Ron attended University of Toronto and McMaster University. An accomplished athlete, he played competitive hockey, football, and tennis. He came to Ottawa in 1965 as a Physical Education and Science teacher at Laurentian High School. Who knew he would teach and coach there for 33 years! He was a dedicated and loved teacher and coach and, teamed with Bob Wills, amassed an incredible record in Senior Football Championships with the Laurentian Lions. I'd like to think he and Bob are now reunited and sharing stories of the "glory days". Upon his retirement, Ron was profoundly honoured when the Football Alumnae established a scholarship fund in his and Bob's names. Each June, this fund awards two scholarships to deserving players, chosen not for athletic ability, but for their character and integrity. In further recognition of his lasting impact, the Senior Championship trophy now bears the name The Wills Graham Trophy.

Throughout his career, Ron held a deep affection for “the boys.” Many remained in touch long after their playing days, often expressing heartfelt gratitude for his guidance in shaping their lives. His influence reached far beyond the field, instilling in his players the values of discipline, determination, and courage.

Since his passing, hundreds of tributes have poured onto the LHS Facebook page, a powerful testament to the countless lives he inspired and touched. His legacy endures in every player, every lesson, and every tradition he helped build. “Rest in peace, Coach. Lion Pride!”

Ron also coached basketball, volleyball and track and field. Unfortunately, he never stopped cheering for those Toronto Argonauts!

Ron was well known by staff, students and friends as a car lover. He enjoyed his Austin Healey, a Dodge Charger, and many Corvettes, which he drove until he couldn't get in or out anymore! As a member of the Ottawa Curling Club, he competed provincially with success. Many people marveled that this loud jock was also a talented artist creating beautiful stained glass works. He also enjoyed playing bridge and gin in the Laurentian staff room. After retirement, Ron and Jean wintered in Las Cruces, New Mexico playing golf and bridge, and living the good life.

Golf was Ron's second love. For nearly 50 years a proud and active member of The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, he forged many friendships and represented the club in City and District and Intersectional Competitions. A former Club Champion and Senior Club Champion, Ron achieved an amazing 7 holes in one.

Ron was a fierce competitor and wasn't always known to be a gracious loser. One of his longtime teaching friends has written, "He was smart, funny and at times, obnoxious and infuriating but we loved him because he was real. No false pretenses with his work buddies." (He did mellow a bit in later years!)

Diagnosed with Dementia in 2023, Ron's life changed as his body betrayed him. He hated that he could no longer do so many things he loved. Special thanks to Dr. Lindsey Bartlett for her amazing care over the years.

At Ron's request, there will be no funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kanata Golf and Country Club on September 27, 2-5 pm, tributes at 3:30.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Dementia Society of Ottawa.
