Clive, aged 90 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by his chosen family (Gloria Wong, Michael Wong (Kristin Shropshire), Jen Collette) in Ottawa. He will be dearly missed after many family events, vacations and important times spent together spanning more than 40 years.
Predeceased by his father Clive Stanley Oakes (1889-1974), his mother Kay Anderson Oakes (1898-1990) and his sister Elaine Oakes (1932-2009). Survived by his nieces and nephew, Andrea LeDuc, Deidre Yates, Gloria Dignazio and Eric Houlden.
Clive was an electrical engineer (BASc and MASc from the University of Toronto) and an avid ham radio operator (VE3YB). Among his proudest accomplishments was his work on Search and Rescue technology that was launched on the Anik series of satellites. In later years, he was a research associate at the University of Toronto, continuing to work on his lifelong passion for electrical engineering with his friend and colleague, Keith Balmain (1933-2019).
We are most grateful to the thoughtful and dedicated staff at the Maplewood Retirement Community for their precious care for Clive over the past 6 years and the staff at the Ottawa Hospital - Civic campus for their compassion during Clive’s last days.
Clive will be interred with his parents at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto. In keeping with Clive’s preferences, a service will not be held. Donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Heart & Stroke Foundation would honour causes that were most important to Clive in recent years.
