With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Bing Han, who left this world just weeks shy of his 91st birthday.
Born in Surabaya, Indonesia, Bing was a pioneering telecommunications engineer who made lasting contributions in Research and Development across Europe and Canada. His ingenuity earned him five German patents during his tenure at Siemens in Munich, one with Canadian Marconi in Montreal, and two with Bell Northern Research in Ottawa.
Later, at SHAPE Technical Centre and the NATO C3 Agency in The Hague, Bing was instrumental in the introduction of video teleconferencing systems in Allied Command Europe (ACE), and contributed significantly to network planning and data communication.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bing was a devoted husband to Kim Han (née Oh), with whom he shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. He was a loving father to the late Siu-Ling, to Jeffrey (Diane Waclawik) of Ottawa, and to Timothy of London, England. He was also a cherished Opa to Kellen (Veronica), Shawn (Roberta), Kina, Yi Zhen, Jin, Calvin, and Drew—across Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. Bing was well-respected by former colleagues, friends and family in Canada, Indonesia, Australia, the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, and Norway.
Bing is now reunited with his beloved Siu-Ling, who passed away in 2016.
Bing was a man of progressive and open mind. He embraced new ideas without judgement and encouraged thoughtful discourse, always valuing understanding over assumption. This openness not only shaped his relationships but also drove his pioneering work in technology.
He will be remembered for his sharp intellect, tireless work ethic, and passion for innovation. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry and will continue to influence generations to come.
His kindness, wisdom, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy will continue to inspire.
To honour Bing’s memory, the family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Traumatic Brain Injury Research at the Ottawa General Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
