Betty-Lou (Betsy) Cummings

It is with great sadness that the family of Betty-Lou Cummings announces her passing on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the age of 92, with the love of her family surrounding her. 

Betsy will be lovingly remembered by John, her husband of nearly 70 years, their four daughters: Lynn (Norm), Cathy (Barry), Susan (Steven), and Carol (Frank); and ten grandchildren: Christina, Sarah, John (Meagan), Julia (Kevin), Ken (Trisha), Val, Lilianne, James, Kate (Hunter), and Eric, as well as numerous relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her brother Dave and parents Grace and Stanley. Betsy was born in 1933 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She grew up surrounded by unabashedly authentic people who left her with countless fond memories and entertaining stories. After graduating from nursing at Presbyterian Hospital, Betsy met John, a Canadian student who quickly captured her heart. They married and moved to Ottawa, where Betsy embraced Canadian life, learning to skate, ski, and sail. Together they built a rich life filled with shared passions. They enjoyed classical music, played bridge, watched hockey, walked to work, and travelled widely. Betsy even learned to crew on racing-class sailboats, mastering the thrill of flying a spinnaker from a trapeze harness in high winds. In the 1970s, John and Betsy competed in sailing regattas across Ontario and beyond, creating cherished memories of their adventures on the water. Betsy was a woman of many talents and interests. She painted, sewed, and knitted clothing for her children and grandchildren, biked with friends from the local Y, and regularly played Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Her happiest place was the cottage, where she loved early morning swims, quiet reading, and time spent with the family.

Betsy’s infectious smile could brighten any room and her quick wit – shared generously even in her later days – brought joy to everyone around her. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. 

At Betsy’s request, no service will be held. A private celebration of life with immediate family will be held at a later date.
