Beryl Grace Hastie (nee Walter)
Beryl passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, at the age of 77. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack Hastie, her son Steven Hastie, her parents, Lillian Violet Walter (Waller) and Norman Walter, and her sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Sidney Dixon. Beryl is survived by her loving daughters, Lorraine (Jim) and Samantha (Martin), her grandchildren, Jesse (Brittany), Danielle (Bradley) and Jack, and her great grandchildren, Bobby ‘Jack’ and Violet ‘Grace’. She will be fondly remembered by her nephews, Colin and Ian (Kelli) and niece Jeanette (John) and great nephew, Jake (Sarah) and great nieces, Lily (Brad) and Olivia.
Beryl was born in Croydon, England, and raised by her mother, who we all knew as ‘Nan’. Life wasn’t easy on Beryl. She lost her father at a tender age of 4, and at 8 years of age, her only sibling Sylvia, who was 9 years older, married and moved out of their home. Often left to her own devices, Beryl faced many hardships but grew to live selflessly with tremendous strength.
In 1963, Beryl met the love of her life outside the Hilltoppers Club in Addington. In Jack’s words, she was so beautiful in her red coat with a cleopatra hairstyle. Beryl and Jack were married on October 16, 1965, at the Parish Church of St. Mary. In 1970, Beryl and Jack immigrated to Canada with Steven (3) and Lorraine (4 months), also bringing Nan to live in a new country joining her sister Sylvia and family. Beryl and Jack lived in Bells Corners and welcomed their third child, Samantha in March of 1971. In the mid 70’s, the Hastie’s moved to the village of Richmond, where they called home for the remainder of their years together. They are remembered by a great community of friends and neighbours.
Throughout her life, Beryl worked various retail and waitressing positions, always enjoying interacting and meeting new people. A beautiful soul who greeted everyone she encountered with kindness and warmth, Beryl will be remembered for her immense love for family, music, dancing and the best hugs ever! You couldn’t escape a visit with Beryl without a smile, laugh or hug. No matter how much you loved her, she ‘loved you more’ ❤.
Lorraine and Samantha wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Bayfield Manor and Southbridge Kemptville who cared for their mother with such love and compassion over the last 6 and a half years.
Memorial Service will be held at the Kars Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 1610 Roger Stevens Drive, Kars on Monday, February 16th, 2026 at noon.
A Celebration of life for Beryl, Jack and Steven will follow at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 625, 6430 Ottawa St W. Richmond.
For anyone wishing to make a donation, Beryl would have wanted them to be made to the Ottawa Hospital for ALS research, honouring her son Steven.
