It is with heavy and shattered hearts that his wife, Micheline, shares the passing of her beloved and amazing husband, Barrie Marfleet, who left this world on August 29th at 10:36 am in Ottawa, at the age of 78.
Barrie faced a courageous four-year battle with cancer, showing strength, grace, and determination every step of the way.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Micheline Lepage, who feels deeply honored to have been his partner in life and is forever grateful for the adventures and love they shared. He was truly the captain of her life—her guiding light and strength.
Barrie also leaves behind his step-daughter Natalie Levesque (Brad), step-daughter-in-law Laurie Seguin Levesque, and grandchildren Lilly, Christian, and Chloe. He was the father of three sons: David, Kevin, and Brian. Barrie was especially grateful to have shared time with David the week before his passing. Though life’s circumstances created distance and years of silence with Kevin and Brian, Barrie carried their memory with him always, and his love for them remained—quiet, steady and strong.
Born in London, England, Barrie immigrated to Canada with his parents at the age of seven and spend most of his life in the Toronto/Mississauga area before moving to Ottawa. He was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Reginald Marfleet, and was their only child.
Barrie will be lovingly remembered by extended family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Those who knew him will recall his sharp sense of humor, dry British wit, determination, generosity, and his gift for music and talent on the keyboard and accordion. He was a man of kindness - often expressed in the most unexpected moments – who loved deeply and found meaning in building things that lasted, whether through his work or the close friendships he nurtured over the years.
He lived life with passion, curiosity, and an endless zest for projects and hobbies. With an inquisitive mind and a gift for repairing what was broken - whether machines or moments – he brought care and craftmanship to all he touched. In retirement, Barrie found joy in boating, restoring and collecting old clocks, and pouring love into home and boat renovations.
Barrie was a devoted, passionate and active Board Member of Bereaved Families of Ontario – Ottawa Region (BFO Ottawa), a registered charity that has offered peer grief support for over 45 years. He worked tirelessly to raise awareness, fundraise, and advocate for BFO Ottawa’s mission with the community leaders in Ottawa. He also represented BFO Ottawa on the BFO Provincial Board. In true Barrie fashion, even in his final days, he continued to share BFO Ottawa’s mission with the compassionate hospital staff who cared for him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 21st from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at: Tubman Funeral Home, 3440 Richmond Rd, Ottawa, ON K2H 8H7 (Located behind the Queensway Carleton Hospital)
In his final days, Barrie expressed “in lieu of flowers, make sure that donations are made in my memory to BFO Ottawa.” This tribute reflects his passion and dedication to helping others navigate grief. (Please indicate your gift is in memory of Barrie Marfleet.)
In Barrie’s final days and in his own word, expressed that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to BFO Ottawa—a tribute to his passion and dedication to helping others navigate grief. (Please indicate your gift is in memory of Barrie Marfleet.)
Barrie leaves behind a story with both light and shadow—a story that reminds us of the power of forgiveness and the quiet hope that love can outlast silence.
Thank you for being part of Barrie’s life. He valued and appreciated everyone who touched his heart along the way.
May he rest in peace, and may time bring healing and remembrance to those who knew and loved him.
