In Loving Memory of Dr. Archibald D. Boyd
March 12, 1929 – October 13, 2025
Dr. Archibald D. (“Archie”) Boyd passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Nova Scotia to Rose and William Boyd, Archie’s early life was marked by both hardship and resilience. After losing his father at the age of three, he grew up with a quiet strength and steadfast determination that would define his life.
Archie married his beloved late wife, Moira Claire Sims, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership built on love, faith, and mutual respect. He is survived by his cherished sister Helen MacDonald, and his loving children and daughters-in-law — John (Elaine), Douglas (Lee), and Brendan (Nadine). Archie’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren — Matt, Sarah, Samantha, DJ, Kimmerly, Patrick, and Julia — and great-grandchildren — Tiffany, Mari, and Maeve — who will grow up hearing stories of the quiet strength, humor, and integrity that guided his life.
A Life of Purpose and Service
Dr. Boyd’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge and public service began in his home province. He earned his BA (1949) and Diploma in Education (1950) from St. Francis Xavier University, followed by an MA in Economics (1952) from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Economics (1967) from the University of Ottawa.
His distinguished career spanned both academia and government. From 1952 to 1955, he lectured in economics at St. Francis Xavier University before joining the Nova Scotia Department of Trade and Industry as an economic adviser. In 1958, he began a long and impactful tenure with the Federal Department of Labour (later the Department of Manpower and Immigration), where he served as Head of the Highly Qualified Manpower Research Section.
Dr. Boyd’s influence extended beyond Canada’s borders through his work with the OECD Committee on Educational Investment and Planning and as a member of the Canadian Delegation to the Intergovernmental Conference on the Utilization of Highly Qualified Manpower (1971). He later held senior roles in the Department of Regional Economic Expansion, the Science Council of Canada, and the Department of Finance’s Social Development and Manpower Policy Division.
A thoughtful researcher and writer, Dr. Boyd authored and co-authored several studies on the relationship between education and employment, including Education and Jobs — a reflection of his enduring belief in the power of education to transform lives.
A Man of Faith, Family, and Quiet Strength
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Archie was first and foremost a family man — a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Those who knew him best remember a man of deep faith, unwavering integrity, and a moral compass that guided every decision. He inspired his children’s pursuit of education and purpose, encouraging them to work hard and live with principle.
Archie possessed a keen and disciplined mind, an eye for detail, and a quiet strength that inspired all who knew him. Even in the face of adversity, particularly in his later years, he never complained — meeting life’s challenges with grace, courage, and stoicism.
His kindness extended far beyond his immediate family. Archie was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially to his sons or their friends in times of need. To those who loved him, he was a rock: dependable, generous, wise, and deeply compassionate.
A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Boyd leaves behind not only a record of professional excellence, but also a legacy of love, perseverance, and faith. His life serves as a reminder that true greatness lies not in recognition or status, but in quiet acts of service, steadfast devotion to family, and a life lived with humility and heart.
He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
