Anthony (Tony) Richard Oland passed away in Ottawa on May 7th, 2023 at the age of 91. Born in 1932 in Saint John, NB, Tony was the youngest son of the late George Bauld Oland and Violet Ellen (Summerskill) Oland.
Tony was most at home enjoying the free spontaneity of jazz music right up to his last days. He always craved adventure, curious as he was about people and cultures throughout the world. Forever a child-at-heart, Tony loved children, swimming in the ocean (preferably the Pacific!), and food - the more esoteric, the better. In years gone by, Tony was a gracious host, and generous to family, friends, strangers, and to the odd stray cat.
It is probably Tony's sense of humour that will be missed most by his family. Along with his parents, Anthony is predeceased by the mother of his four daughters, Mary Isabel (Hachey) Oland. He will be lovingly remembered by his companion, Inger Nielsen; as well as by his four daughters: Paula Oland (William Young) and daughters Kiera and Emma; Andrea Oland and daughters Courtney and Kiah; Krysta Oland (Derek Simon) and their sons, Nathanael and Jonathyn; Denise Hoppner (Ken Hoppner) and their children, Morgan (Wes), Karl (Chantal) and Anonda; as well as by his great-grandchildren Park, Crew and Hudson. Tony was also affectionately known as "Uncle Tony" to a swath of nieces and nephews!
Tony is predeceased by his beloved niece and kindred spirit who was raised alongside him as a sister, Mary Louise (Oland) March. The youngest and sole survivor of seven siblings, he was also predeceased by his sisters Ruth Williams, Jean Henderson, and Ellenor Fallon; and brothers George Alfred Oland, Paul Oland and Philip Oland.
Tony's daughters would like to thank the medical team at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa who cared for him in his final days, as well as the compassionate team at Westwood Retirement Home for their care during these past few years. As per his request, his body has been donated to the University of Ottawa for medical research.
