Alice Mathilda Burke in her 97th year, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at her home of 65 years in Malakoff, Ontario, with her daughter by her side.
Born on December 6, 1929, in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to the late David and Irene (Bowdridge) Burt.
Alice was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, friend, and neighbour.
Over such a long life, Alice fulfilled many roles; she was a seamstress in a dress factory, a proof-reader for the Guelph Mercury, a stay at home mom, an assembler for Computing Devices (General Dynamics), an owner /operator with her husband of Marlboro Gardens, custodian at the Rideau Township Offices and Manotick Library, a rural route mail driver with Transport Canada and lastly a postal worker in the North Gower Post Office until she retired at the age of 86.
Alice (Ali B) was a woman of many talents and interests. She was a creative and skilled seamstress, quilter, rug hooker, knitter, and gardener. She was a member of the North Gower Women’s Institute, Boots and Baskets Rug Hooking Guild of Burritt’s Rapids Ontario and the North Gower Knitting Club. She was a volunteer at the North Gower Library for several years, a strong advocate of the Rideau Snowmobile Club, and an avid supporter of her overall community.
Alice was happiest when she was working outside in her gardens and caring for her home.
Alice is predeceased by her husband Bernard (1974); daughter Barbara Susan (1976), son James Kevin (1991) and brother Bob Burt (1994), among other family members.
Alice is survived by her daughter Patricia; brothers Gordon Burt (Cheryl Bolton), Bernie Burt, Donald Burt (Louise), David Burt (Barb), sister Mary-Alice Murrin (Keith), and brothers Darrell Burt, and Jake Burt (Linda Kaszuba).
Nanny will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Keriann Kenney (David) and Derrick Hope (Chantal Seguin), and her great-grandchildren, Jaylin, Wendel, Donovan, Emmitt, and Blake. Alice will also be deeply missed by Jennifer and Rodney Willows as well as by Paulette, Jonathon, Kathleen, Christina and her many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

Those wishing may make memorial donations to the North Gower Food Bank, Salvation Army or the Humane Society.
A private family burial will be held in the spring of 2026.
