It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Hunter who departed peacefully on Sunday April 12, 2026 at his home in Stittsville, Ontario at the age of 92 years.
Born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England to former Head Postmaster of Bath and later Bournemouth Samuel Hastings and Gladys Hunter. Alan served in the British Army with the First Commonwealth Division in Korea and GHQ in Egypt rising to the rank of Captain (retired). He taught at King Edward VI school in Chelmsford before emigrating to Canada in 1968.
Alan earned a BA from the University of Toronto and a Master’s of Education from O.I.S.E. and developed many of the outdoor education programs at the Jack Smythe Field Study Centre where he taught until retiring.
He lived an active life that included rock climbing, caving, kayaking, tennis and a number of team activities. His humour, kindness and love will be missed by all who knew him.
Alan is survived by his loving wife Tomi and children Neil (Janice), Emma, Kelly Wilhelm (Blair), Michael (Beth), Cameron (Heather) and grandchildren Eleanore, Amelia, Audrey, Diana, Brianna and Ryleigh.
He is pre-deceased by father Samuel Hastings Hunter, mother Gladys and brother Malcolm.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Tubman Funeral Home, Garden Chapel location, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, Ontario.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Trans Canada Trail or the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation.
