June Elvira Akins

August 8, 1940 – September 9, 2020

It is with sad hearts, the family and friends of June Elvira Akins announce her sudden passing on Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Harold and Dorothy (Driscoll) Akins and her darling brother David Wesley Akins (2019). Survived by her favourite sister-in-law of over 50 years, Marybeth Akins of Mississauga, Ontario. Left to mourn are special friends; The Hagars, The Charettes, The Bradleys and The Guzzos along with her many Driscoll and Akins cousins and devoted friends.

Born in Sudbury Ontario, June moved to 8th Line Goulbourn Township (Stittsville) as a baby, soon to be joined by brother David.  Her childhood on the family dairy farm and her attendance at a one-room school house, brought great joy and molded her hard work ethic.

She excelled at South Carleton HS, making lifelong friends along the way.  Her caring nature led her to the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1960 and then furthered her education with a Diploma in Public Health Nursing at The University of Ottawa.  June often reminisced that these were the happiest days of her life.

She worked at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in child psychiatry, became a school nurse at Ridgemont HS and then worked for the City of Ottawa as a public health nurse until her retirement at age 56. She was always grateful for her opportunity to serve others and the community.

A special person, she was genuinely interested and invested in so many of us. To the people whom she loved and who loved her – be joyful and glad that your paths crossed, for in her life she loved you all. A private Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 19,2020 at Tubman Funeral Homes, Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean. For those unable to attend in person a live streaming option is available and can be requested by emailing service@tubmanfuneralhomes.com or by calling 613-722-6559.
