DAGHOFER, Hermine

nee Sittner

Hermine gently passed on to join her beloved Eddie and Dagmar, on Sunday, September 22, with friends and family by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Evelyn (Gordon Reid), Diana (Don Pacey), honorary daughter Lorraine Dupre (Michel Guilbeault), and son-in-law Doug Hawes (Dagmar). Grandchildren Mitchell, Joanna, Baylie and Tanya will sorely miss their Oma.

Hermi prized her Austrian heritage greatly, and conscientiously kept those traditions alive. She was well known for Austrian specialties like Goulash, Schweinzbraten and her fabulous Knoedel. Her beautiful tortes and mouth-watering apple strudel were famous! In the lead-up to Christmas, our house was filled with the scents of baking and fir boughs. Mom and her good friend Jo spent hours hand-tying wreaths from the branches they collected in the woods.

After coming to Canada in 1954, Hermine continued her craft as a dressmaker, working in high-end boutiques until she started her own business from home. Her three daughters, Evelyn, Diana and Dagmar, distracted her from work for a time, but it was a distraction she welcomed. More than anything, Hermi was a mother and caregiver. She dedicated her life to caring for her husband and raising her girls, sewing their almost-matching dresses, volunteering at the school library and cafeteria, and planning family hikes and camping trips. When grandchildren arrived, they gave her a renewed zest for life.

Nature definitely called to Hermi, and she loved hiking, biking, skiing, swimming and tennis. She even came home from the Chambly Bowling League with a trophy or two over the years. Hermi loved to dance, and was happiest in the arms of her graceful husband, Eddie, spinning around the room at dizzying speeds.

Hermi’s laugh, love and nurturing ways will be missed by us all.

A celebration of Hermine’s life will take place on Sunday, October 6, at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, in Pointe Claire, QC. Visitation is at 1 p.m., service at 2 p.m., and a reception to follow. Graveside interment will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7 at Crystal Lake cemetery in Stanstead, QC. In honour of Hermine, donations can be made to either Prevent Cancer Now at http://www.preventcancernow.ca/donate-to-pcn/ or the Dementia Society at https://dementiasociety.thankyou4caring.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=298.
